Urge Canada to Act to Stop Demolitions |
Call your MP's to ask that they Condemn the Killings in Gaza |
Join the United Church in calling on Canada to urge the Israeli government to reverse the decisions to demolish the villages of Khan Al Ahmar and Susiya and relocate the people of Khan Al Ahmar.
The threat of demolition is immanent. On August 1, 2018, Israel’s High Court stated that there is “no avoiding the demolition of Khan Al Ahmar.” Demolitions were postponed for five days for the legal representatives of the village to consider a compromise regarding where Khan Al Ahmar residents will be forcibly transferred. The repeated threats of demolitions in Bedouin Palestinian villages—such as Susiya, Khan Al Amar, and Ein ar Rashash—are a violation of international law. As the occupying power, Israel is bound by international humanitarian law to protect the Palestinian civilian population and administer the territory for their benefit. International law also prohibits the destruction of private property and the forced transfer or displacement of civilians.
According to Canadian policy, all Israeli settlements, including Ma’ale Adumim, are illegal. Demolitions and forcible displacement of Khan Al Ahmar and similar communities are a serious violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and leave hundreds of people homeless. |
The latest Great March of Return comes on the annual commemorations of the Nakba, or "catastrophe", when the state of Israel was established on May 15, 1948, in a violent campaign that led to the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their villages.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 55 Palestinians, including six children, were killed by Israeli forces during mass protests along the Gaza border on Monday (May 14). It was the deadliest day there since a devastating 2014 cross-border war. The ministry also said 1,204 Palestinians were shot and wounded, including 116 who were in serious or critical condition. It said about 1,200 others suffered other types of injuries, including from tear gas. (CBC News) Since the protests began on March 30, Israeli forces have killed at least 104 Palestinians in the coastal enclave and wounded about 12,000 people. B’Tselem notes that “the demonstrations held in Gaza today [May 14] came as no surprise. Israel had plenty of time to come up with alternate approaches for dealing with the protests, apart from firing live ammunition. The fact that live gunfire is once again the sole measure that the Israeli military is using in the field evinces appalling indifference towards human life on the part of senior Israeli government and military officials. B’Tselem calls for an immediate halt to the killing of Palestinian demonstrators. If the relevant officials do not issue an order to stop the lethal fire, the soldiers in the field must refuse to comply with these manifestly unlawful open-fire orders.” Meanwhile the US Embassy officially opened in Jerusalem: a cynical, dangerous celebration of annexation. This is the ongoing Nakba,” said Rebecca Vilkomerson, Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace. “The celebration of annexation, even as Palestinians – the vast majority of whom are refugees – are being gunned down simply for protesting for their basic rights to live in dignity and freedom, could not illustrate more clearly the continuing catastrophe that Israel is imposing on Palestinians. Still worse, it’s doing so with the full collusion of the U.S.” It’s not just a 70th year anniversary: Palestinian human rights are being trampled at this very moment. Palestinians are being killed for defending those rights, as we speak. Jewish Voices for Peace is calling for US citizens to call their representatives. Join with them in calling for Canadian MP’s to speak up. |
